The Hidden Load No One Talks About: Decision Fatigue in Midlife Women
There is a particular kind of tired that does not get resolved with sleep. It shows up at the end of the day, when everything is technically “done”, but your capacity to think, choose, or engage has quietly disappeared. You stand in the kitchen knowing what would support your body, and still find yourself reaching for whatever is easiest. Not because you do not care, and not because you do not know better, but because something in you is simply… done.
Most women I work with recognise this feeling immediately. They describe it as exhaustion, but when we look a little closer, it is not just physical fatigue. It is cognitive. It is the accumulated weight of decisions made across the day, and across the years. We do not often name it, but it has a name. Decision fatigue.
Why Smart Women Still Feel Stuck With Their Health
For a long time, women have been sold the idea that good health is simple. Eat less, move more, get more sleep, manage your stress, balance your hormones, take the right supplements, follow the plan, stay disciplined, be consistent.
On the surface, it all sounds sensible. In fact, it sounds so sensible that when it does not work, many women quietly decide the problem must be them. They assume they have missed something, misunderstood something, or somehow failed at what should have been straightforward.
Yet that is not what I see.
The Gen-X Burnout Crisis: Understanding and Addressing the Impact
As we continue to explore the theme of “Your Voice. Your Choice.” during Women’s Health Week, I feel it’s crucial to delve deeper into the issue of burnout among Gen-X women.
Burnout rates for women in Australia and New Zealand have been a growing concern, especially in recent years. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics and research institutions like Auckland University of Technology and Health Roundtable, 46% of women report experiencing and feeling burn out.
Women’s Health Week 2024 “Your Voice. Your Choice.”
It’s Women’s Health Week from 2 – 6 September, and this year’s theme is “Your Voice. Your Choice.”
To me, “Your Voice. Your Choice.” is about the importance of women feeling seen and heard by medical professionals. It’s a call to action for women to advocate for their health and well-being.
